What is ClassDojo?
ClassDojo is an app that allows teachers, students and their parents to record student behaviour in class.
A set of expected behaviour is keyed into the class file in ClassDojo and a point is awarded when the teacher catches students doing good... or doing bad. I lean more towards doing good as mot of my students tend to want that recorded, too. :)
What are the positive behaviours we want to see in our classroom?
Stays on task.
Waits for turn to speak.
Works well with a team.
Goes the extra mile.
Ready to learn.
Submits work on time.
Shares interesting and thoughtful ideas.
Perseveres to achieve goals.
What are the negative behaviors we want to discourage?
Talking out of turn.
Not involved in teamwork.
Late for class.
How do we use it in class?
It's always one of the open tabs in my laptop so I go in the class and plug my laptop onto the projector. The students immediately see their avatars and their positive points.
I then go ahead and write the objectives of the hour (or half hour on the board). Then we start class.
I award points as we discuss. If someone shares an interesting thought, I go to their avatar and give them a point. If I see groups of students working well together, I go to their avatars and award them points. If I see them off task and they've been reminded a few times to concentrate then they're given demerits as well. The whole class sees this on the screen when I input the points via laptop.
But the app is in my Samsung Note 8, too. So, sometimes, when I'm not in front of my laptop, I tote my Note 8 with me and use the ClassDojo app in it to award points as I go around. The real interesting thing about it is that it only takes a moment or two for the students to see it reflected on the website. So they see me input their point on my Note 8 and see the actual point enter on the projected screen. This keeps them on task and eager to earn points by doing what is expected of them.
The app works on laptops, tablets (Android and iPad) and smartphones.
